Hot Springs and its therapeutic water became a favorite gathering place for Native Americans long before European settlers came to the new world. In 1832, President Andrew Jackson designated Hot Springs as America's First Federal Reservation to protect the natural resource. Part of the protected lands included historic Bathhouse Row. These iconic bathhouses have attracted visitors for generations who come to experience the geothermal water that come out of the ground at 143 degrees Fahrenheit after a 4,000-year, 7-mile journey. During the Golden Age of Bathing in the 1940's, over a million baths a year were taken in Hot Springs. To this day, visitors travel far and wide to soak up our famous thermal spring water as Hot Springs continues to bathe the world!
