Top 10 Don't Miss Things at Spa-Con V | Hot Springs, Arkansas

The Rise of Spa-Con V. There will be capes, masks, wigs, elaborate hand-made cosplays. There will be comics, illustrated novels, and fan art. There will be video gaming, table-top gaming and even a "nerd dating game." Spa-Con is more than just comics sold over folding tables. It's a full blown production of parades, concerts, confetti cannons and celebration of all things in Nerd pop-culture. It's also the best people watching in the state. Here are the top 10 things not to miss at Spa-Con, September 24-26 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.


Nur-D makes his debut performance in Arkansas with an opening night concert at Horner Hall. Expect big energy, big smiles, and earworms like "Take My Picture" and "Black Wizard Wave". You'll be singing them the whole weekend. The opening ceremony and Nur-D show is set for Friday at 7PM. Spa-Con pass required.


501st Legion Procession will open the doors to the Spa-Con Expo Hall at 10AM on Saturday. Expect Stormtroopers, Clone Troopers, Imperial Officers, Siths, Bounty Hunters, and droids. Be warned, the towering Darth Vader could be around any corner! The 501st will be in the Expo Hall all weekend.


Rodger Bumpass, aka the voice of Squidward from Spongebob will be at Spa-Con all weekend. Don't miss his presentation, Rodger Bumpass, A Life of Squidward and other Voices," on Saturday at Noon in Room 208.


Smash Bros - Spa-Con Showdown video game tournament brings the best Mario players in the region to a head to head double elimination with a $1000+ pot on the line for the top players. Play begins at 1pm Saturday in the Bank OZK Arena. There's still time to register at SMASH.GG


The Cosplay Club is hands down one of the events that sets Spa-Con apart from other Cons in the state. A full blown nightclub setting complete with fog, lights, and dance jams. Plus, guest cosplayers Knightmage, MCubed, Gregory Harris, Nerd Revelations and EmmyLou Cosplay will be there to join in the fun! The night features a cosplay contest, sponsored by Hot Springs Beauty College, where the best of the best cosplayers show off their builds for cash money and prizes. Not to be missed. Saturday at 7PM in Horner Hall.


The Expo Hall opens at 10AM on Saturday Morning. With over 200 vendors and artists selling and showing off comics, toys, collectibles, games and original works of arts. Look for special guest artists; Michael Golden, Rodney Ramos, Chad Maupin, Georges Jeanty, Tone Rodriguez, Rags Morales, Candace Dailey, Jeremy Clark and Renee Witterstaeter. Pro tip - A Garland County Library card will gain you access to the Expo Hall free of charge.


Workshops are probably one of the most overlooked components of Spa-Con, but this year's classes are top-notch offerings. You could spend your whole weekend enriching your brain. Add these to your itinerary; Tony Buck FX Mask Making, How To Make a Cyber Arm, Cosplay Make-Up 101, and a semester's worth of comics workshops. Check out the full schedule here. The Kids Cosplay Showcase wins for cutest Spa-Con event. Bring your best child Batman, your 3-foot tall Elsa, and mini-Skywalkers for their moment on stage. The showcase is just that too. It's just a chance to show off, and not a contest. Moms and Dads..get those cameras ready. Sunday, 2PM - Room 208.


Room 208, aka The Spa-Con Theater, should be well marked on your convention map. The space will host; The Dating Game (for Nerds), a Fun with Nitrogen demo, a Harry Potter Sorting Hat event featuring the Hot Springs Community Pocket Theatre, the Rodger Bumpass chat, and the Spa-Con "SpAcademy" closing awards on Sunday at 4PM. Artemis Starship Bridge Simulator is a most impressive set up for a fun group gaming experience. Players form a crew, lead by a Captain and head off on expeditions and battles. The Spa-Con team takes great care in top notch projection, lights and sound to make Artemis unforgettable. Room 203.
