HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK, Arkansas — Visit Hot Springs and the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup national bass fishing tournament held in August at the Hot Springs Convention Center and Bank OZK Arena have been named as one of the 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism by Sports Destination Management magazine.

Sports Destination Management is the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market.

The 2018 national winners are responsible for contributing more than $700 million to the national economy during the last year, the publication said.

Visit Hot Springs and the FLW Cup, which is the championship event for Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), were responsible for an economic impact of $24,469,765 in Hot Springs, the publication announced. It said the event brought a total of 1,953 room-nights to Hot Springs lodging establishments during its August run.

“The Forrest Wood Cup, which took place in August of 2018, drew more than 66,000 fans and anglers to Hot Springs to watch the world’s best anglers compete on Lake Ouachita,” the publication said. “The FLW Expo also came to the Hot Springs Convention Center, drawing hundreds of exhibitors with not just gear but family-friendly activities and games. The event was such a success that FLW announced Hot Springs will host the event again in 2019, making it the first city to host back-to-back Cups in the FLW Tour’s history.”

“It is a testament to the hard work of the Visit Hot Springs staff, the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission and the great friendly residents of Hot Springs that we not only were honored for our economic achievement but also that we will host the FLW Cup again next year,” said Steve Arrison, CEO of Visit Hot Springs. “We look forward to having FLW as our guests again in August 2019, and the benefits the event brings for every citizen of our city.”

The 2019 Forrest Wood Cup will be held August 9 – 11 on Lake Hamilton.

“Hot Springs and FLW have established a great relationship in the 20 years that we have hosted their great events, and we are thrilled and grateful that the FLW Cup is returning to our city,” Arrison said. “FLW not only does the best job in the world at putting on a family-friendly event that literally has something for everyone, but it also does a tremendous job of highlighting the great fishing, great attractions and great facilities we have here in Hot Springs. Our entire community always benefits when FLW comes to town — not only economically and publicity-wise, but also from a great, wholesome time for our residents and visitors alike. We can’t wait to welcome them back again.”

In addition to international media coverage, the FLW Cup will again bring the three-day FLW Expo to the Hot Springs Convention Center and Bank OZK Arena. Hundreds of exhibitors will be on-site to showcase the latest and greatest gear and products along with games and giveaways for the entire family.

“The FLW Cup is an incredibly special event where we celebrate our anglers’ achievements both on and off the water alongside the biggest names in the outdoor industry. It requires the right kind of facilities and a community dedicated to the outdoors, and Hot Springs offers up both and more,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW President of Operations. “The Central Arkansas region has a storied bass-fishing history and has long been a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. We’re excited to continue showcasing it on the international stage.”

Visit Hot Springs and FLW were among the winners in the small-market division of the Sports Destination Management awards.
